Troubleshooting high exhaust temps on underground loaders

You’re operating your loader when, out of the blue, the exhaust temps spike, making your cab feel like a sauna. What challenges have you run into, and what quick checks or handy tricks do you use to cool things off before alarms go off or you experience downtime?

First off, I always check the DPF status. If you’ve been idling a lot or just doing light work, it can get clogged and the temps will spike. Just force a regen cycle and let it burn off. Usually, the problem sorts itself out in about twenty minutes, you just have to let it do its thing.

If your radiator screens are packed with dust, your engine can overheat pretty quickly.
I make it a habit to blow mine out with compressed air every couple of days during harvest season.
It only takes five minutes and keeps the temperatures in check, even when it’s scorching outside definitely a game changer.

I ran into this issue during some demo work last summer. The exhaust temps shot up because my DEF was running low, and the system was in a panic. I topped off the DEF tank, and within minutes, the temps dropped back down.

Don't forget to blow out the radiator and intercooler cores. If the engine can’t get enough cool air through the intercooler, your intake air temps go up, and your EGTs follow suit. a 5 minute blast with an air hose can sometimes drop temps by 50 degrees

That's something many overlook. When the radiator screen gets clogged, that’s when things can really heat up. Just a quick five minutes with an air hose can save a lot of time later. Smart move
