Cold-weather equipment maintenance in sub-zero temps

Out in the freezing cold, where temperatures plummet, maintaining your gear is critical. The biting chill can make every detail matter. Fluids can thicken, batteries can wear out, and any neglect can spell disaster.

What do you consider the most crucial maintenance step to ensure your equipment stays operational in sub-zero weather?

I recall a time when hydraulic fluid got so thick that the machine hardly budged. Since then, I always make sure to use the right winter-grade fluids before the chill hits.

For me, battery health and proper cold-weather fluids are at the top of the list. A machine can be perfectly maintained otherwise but a weak battery or thickened fluids can turn a cold morning into a frustrating day fast.
