Respect the work or stay home

A guy I used to work with treated the mining industry like it was some kind of travel job, bragging about the camps and the money but he didn't last long. He wasn't ready for 12-hr shifts, constant dust and weeks away from home. He found out quick that this is not something you try out for a season and then quit without consequences to the crew who counted on you. I've been in this line since the 90s and what I respect most is the men and women who show up day after day without a fuss and do the job right. That's who keeps the mines safe and running.

Well said. I did a short stint in a copper mine out in Arizona back in the early 2000s, just as support crew, but even that gave me huge respect for the folks who stick it out long-term. The grind is real, and the team depends on every person showing up ready.

Do you think the newer hires today are better prepared, or is it still a shock for most? And how have the camps or safety setups changed since the '90s?

Good to see others who understand what the work is really about.

Since the 90s, the biggest changes have been in safety rules and the camps where we live. People are finally taking safety seriously, which is a significant improvement over how things used to be. The camps are also more comfortable and it's easier to stay in touch with family, which makes being away from home a bit easier.
