You’re driving a fully loaded truck up a long grade, and suddenly, the engine starts to derate. Let’s trade our best tips, tricks, and diagnostic hacks to get to the bottom of what’s causing the system to trip before it slows you down for good.

I still remember the time I was pushing a loaded rig up a mountain pass when the derate hit me out of the blue. Now I always keep tabs on turbo temps, fuel pressure and exhaust sensors. A few quick checks can save me from slowdowns and a lot of frustrated swearing in the middle of a shift.

I remember last summer when I was hauling a heavy load and suddenly my engine derated right in the middle of a climb. It was a sinking feeling. Now I make it a point to check the air filters, intercoolers, and boost pressure before tackling any steep grades. A little prep goes a long way in keeping the truck moving smoothly instead of crawling along

There was this one time my truck derated on a long haul, and I had to nurse it all the way home.
That experience taught me to keep a close eye on coolant levels, intake temperatures, and throttle response.
Catching those early warning signs and keeping the sensors clean really helps reduce stress when climbing.
