Figuring out why a haul truck's engine derates under heavy load

You’re driving a fully loaded truck up a long grade, and suddenly, the engine starts to derate. Let’s trade our best tips, tricks, and diagnostic hacks to get to the bottom of what’s causing the system to trip before it slows you down for good.

I still remember the time I was pushing a loaded rig up a mountain pass when the derate hit me out of the blue. Now I always keep tabs on turbo temps, fuel pressure and exhaust sensors. A few quick checks can save me from slowdowns and a lot of frustrated swearing in the middle of a shift.
