Why I chose mining over other paychecks

I've been in the industry for a few years now, and I keep hearing people say mining is just about the paycheck or the lifestyle. Honestly, I don't buy that. Sure, it's hard work, but for me, it's not about punching a clock or following a routine.
I so love the hands on side of it that involves getting into the pits, operating the loader, watching the rock break apart exactly where I want it to. There's a satisfaction in seeing years of experience translate into smooth, efficient work. You can't get that feeling just driving a truck or doing a desk job.

So to you fellow member, I ask you, are you here just for the work itself, or does the paycheck come first?

Honestly, both matter. Without the paycheck I wouldn't be here, but if it was only money, I'd have burned out quick. I like learning the equipment inside and out, fixing things myself, and seeing the direct payoff in the pit. That's what makes the grind tolerable.

I'm just getting started in mining here in Oregon. I'm mostly helping out at a basalt quarry near Bend. I'm drawn to the hands-on part too, especially watching how skilled operators make it look easy. Curious, did you always know you'd stick with pit work, or did you try other roles first?
